A new study just published in the Journal of the American Medical Association adds to an already impressive body of evidence that supports chiropractic as the treatment of choice for back pain. Researchers looked at 750 active-duty US military members being treated for back pain. Half of the participants received a typical regimen of medical care such as drugs and physiotherapy, while the other half received both medical care and chiropractic treatment. After six weeks, patients receiving chiropractic care reported larger reductions in low back pain and less related disability than people who didn’t get these treatments. The study’s authors emphasized the importance of the findings amid the worsening opioid crisis, indicating that treatments that are less addictive and have fewer side effects, such as chiropractic, should be considered first.
