The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) recently published a review article that concludes once again that spinal manipulation is effective for back pain. The authors of the study reviewed 26 studies involving more than 1700 patients suffering from acute low back pain. The results of their analysis indicate that patients being treated with spinal manipulation experienced less pain and better overall function. While other treatments, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, also seemed to provide modest relief, spinal manipulation stands out because of its safety. As Dr. Richard Deyo MD points out in his editorial in JAMA, even simple over-the-counter medications have important side effects, whereas spinal manipulation is quite safe by comparison.
